The story behind After Bedtime Creations

Why "After Bedtime"?

As a father, my coding time starts after the kids go to sleep. Once the house goes quiet, that's when I can finally focus on creative work.

After Bedtime Creations started from a desire for privacy and control. I wanted tools that don't track me, don't phone home, and work exactly how I want them to. When I couldn't find extensions that met those standards, I decided to build my own.

The Origin Story

I've been tinkering with tech for two decades - hacking game consoles, modding mobile devices, and being the family's go-to tech person.

But the tinkering never stopped. When I couldn't find a browser extension that let me control audio the way I wanted - without ads, without tracking, without abandoned code - I built my own. Per-Tab Audio Control is the result of that same curiosity that had me taking apart electronics as a kid.

Now, as a husband and father, the late-night coding sessions have a bigger purpose. This hobby project is a step toward something more. I build tools that I genuinely use myself, then open them up for others to enjoy and suggest features they need.

Philosophy

Privacy first. These extensions don't track you, collect analytics, or phone home. Your browsing is your business. The source code is open for anyone to verify. No account required, no data stored on servers.

Your choice, your way. Customization isn't an afterthought - it's core to how I build. From header layouts to audio presets to per-site rules, you control your experience. No forced defaults, no "we know best" decisions.

Quality over quantity. I'd rather maintain one excellent extension than ten mediocre ones. Each feature is thoughtfully designed and thoroughly tested before release. Every line of code is reviewed for security and performance.

Open to feedback. I build what I need, but I'm always open to suggestions. If you have an idea for a feature, reach out - the best tools are shaped by the people who use them.

No dark patterns. No fake urgency, no manipulative popups, no guilt-tripping for donations. The extension works fully for free. Support is appreciated but never required.

Technical Approach

Extensions are built with vanilla JavaScript - no frameworks, minimal tooling, and no runtime dependencies that could become security risks. The code is intentionally simple and readable.

Design matters. Every pixel, every interaction, every detail is intentional. Good software should feel polished, not just functional. I spend as much time on the user experience as the underlying code.

Chrome (Manifest V3) is fully supported now, with Firefox coming soon. Both browsers are supported from the same codebase, with browser-specific differences handled cleanly for consistent behavior.

AI & Development

I use AI tools like Claude as development aids - helping with code generation, debugging, and documentation. It's like having a knowledgeable colleague to bounce ideas off at midnight when the house is quiet. Well, quiet except for the clickity-clack that earns me the occasional "are you still typing?!" from the bedroom.

That said, every line of code is reviewed and tested before it ships. AI accelerates the work, but the decisions, architecture, and quality standards are mine. I believe in transparency about how things are built.
